6 Steps to Sanity for the Anxiety-Driven Woman

I had an epiphany this weekend—you know, one of those ah-hah moments where all of life’s frustrations suddenly make perfect sense (or at least most). In order for you to fully understand this moment of enlightenment I experienced, here’s what you need to know about me. I am a first born, people-pleasing perfectionist with high anxiety and the obsessive-compulsive need to wash my hands 25 50 100,000,000 times a day. If you’re thinking I need to make friends with one of those comfy couches and a special doctor who delves into any childhood trauma to discover what the heck screwed me up, you might be right.

In all seriousness, I attended the Renew Faith Conference in the Houston, Texas area that my sweet friend from Sanctification and Spitup orchestrated. This blogger friend of mine happens to be a therapist… or she did practice therapy before deciding to become a stay-at-home mom. Her speaking portion of this conference intrigued me and convicted me with its truths from God’s Word and its practical steps to renew troublesome relationships. These steps happened to do far more than correct bad relationships, they were simple steps to help anxiety-driven people like me alter the brain. Yes, you read that right—I learned how to alter my anxious brain.

Since attending this conference, I have been proactive in taking my thoughts captive as the Scripture teaches in order to better my emotional and spiritual state. And I have also been trying to take better care of my body in order to be refreshed and fully present with my husband and children. Just for fun, I thought I’d share a few of these proactive steps I’m taking in case someone else wants to make some healthy changes, too!

6 Steps to Sanity

Step 1: I begin each day reading and meditating on Psalm 34:4-10, along with my regular Bible reading and spend quality time focusing on all that I’m grateful for in my life. I’ll whet your spiritual appetite for the aforementioned Bible verses with Psalm 34:4 “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” You’ll have to look up the verses to read the rest!

Step 2: I “renamed” myself and daily recite that new name to myself, training my brain to believe it! My new name is “Stephanie, Peace at ALL Times.” Obviously, I did not legally change my name on paper. But, in the Bible, God changed many people’s names when they were made spiritually new. Saul to Paul for example.

Step 3: I am focusing on my gut health which supposedly is connected to so much more than we even realize. Instead of only giving my children probiotics, I’m taking them, too, and am cleansing my system with a few products from Plexus that my friends Morgan and Donna shared with me.

Step 4: I treat myself with yummy coffee drinks (aka creamer with a little bit of coffee). And, I’m using coffee cups that make my heart happy. That may sound ridiculous, but a good coffee cup makes me feel like I went to a fancy coffee shop without actually having to spend a fortune on a cup. Here is one of my favorite cups made out of silicone from GoSili. Love it! And my mini me has her own special cup to make her feel pampered, too!

Step 5: I honestly struggle with stopping to prepare healthy foods to eat. But I love smoothies and protein shakes and do better drinking those in order to get my important nutrients. One yummy morning drink with a punch of protein I make is this peanut butter, chocolate, banana shake. You just throw in 1 cup of milk (I prefer 1% or skim), 1 packet of chocolate-flavored, powdered, vitamin drink mix, 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter (Pic’s Peanut Butter is a new brand I found that is super yummy), half of a banana, and a small handful of ice. Just blend and voila! Mornings start off so much better with an energizing breakfast.

Step 6: I am attempting to get back into running. Running might not be for everyone, but it is definitely my favorite form of exercise. If you despise running, then find a form of exercise you love! Lots of frustration can be squashed with a good bout of exercise.

My hope is that someone else can benefit from the steps I’m taking to get healthier mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. What do you do to stay healthy? Would you add something to this list? Please, feel free to share in the comments.
